I wrote this story on one aspect of emotional intelligence: when people are unable to return your questions about their life and show some interest — genuine or perfunctory — in your life, I tend to form a low opinion of their emotional intelligence.

A disclaimer: I’m not a psychologist or expert in emotional intelligence! I’m just sharing my personal observations!

So some more notes in no particular order.

  • Readiness to announce, in an intimate setting, one’s strong views on inherently complicated and controversial matters. Biden is a joke! How can anyone vote for Trump?! The governor of California is pathetic! Novak Djokovich is a disgrace for refusing to vaccinate! MeToo movement is full of hypocrisy! NATO provoked Russia! Will Smith’s slap was obviously staged! The ongoing mask mandate is stupid! The list goes on. I want to emphasize the “intimate setting” element. By that, I mean a setting where you are, for example, one on one with someone. If something seems very obvious to you, it doesn’t mean it’s obvious to everyone and the person you’re speaking to can be of a totally different opinion. By announcing your strong position, you can be putting the other person in a very awkward position or alienating them, creating constraints for maintaining or developing the future relationship. Unintelligent. Not be confused with articulating something elsewhere — say on social media or in blogging like Medium.
