I’m sure many of you are following the investigation and manhunt related to the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. I feel it’s morally questionable to use the word “fascinating” in relation to what is ultimately a crime and tragedy, but I am personally captivated by the story.

There are so many angles to it. First, the criminal element itself is intriguing. How easy is it to get away with such a brazen crime today, when every step and digital interaction can be tracked? Cold cases from decades ago are now being solved because of advances in investigative techniques like DNA analysis. Here we have a daring crime committed in broad daylight in NYC, and four days later, the suspect hasn’t even been named. A disposed water bottle, a burner phone, a backpack, and a single photo of the suspect’s face uncovered — how much can be solved with this evidence? What we are seeing in the news is probably just the tip of the iceberg. The investigators are likely examining Thompson’s numerous professional and personal interactions in recent months; they are probably working to identify who had access to the CEO’s exact itinerary.
