While I’m against cliches and am skeptical of self improvement advice, I do think that habit building and sticking to marginal improvements (1pct) is the only way to excellence. Everything I ever excelled at was because I stuck to my routine without any compromises. While habit building may not guarantee success, you’re guaranteed not to succeed without discipline, be it sports or work or some other endeavor. One day at a time seems chaotic an approach. Exactly because life is intense and unpredictable it helps to actively inject predictability via habits
