To stay young, I long to become more “old school”.

I’ve always opposed folks commending their generation and criticizing the trends of the modern world. That type of whining is exactly what makes one age. Every generation has its pluses and minuses. Times change — it’s ok. Just because I don’t play video games or use Snapchat, I’m not going to scold the younger generation for not reading books or spending time outdoors and choosing to be on their devices instead. Besides, every generation has a rich mix of diverse individuals — no type is better than the other. There are geeks (who often in their adult life become powerful business leaders) and there are athletes; some read, some don’t; some party, some don’t.

Increasingly though I’ve caught myself longing to live a life that has some things and doesn’t have others. I’m not there yet. Just because I’m a passionate runner, I can’t call label myself a minimalist, an outdoor enthusiast, or some other label used to describe a particular lifestyle.

I am full of terrible habits. Scrolling through my phone, including my social media accounts? Yes. I do it all the time, even when I’m with my family, and should be focused on being present with them. Being inseparable from my laptop? Yes. I use it for work and writing but the ‘inseparability’ is not justified. Bad sleeping habits? Yes, check this box. Not being mindful and present in many personal and professional situations? Guilty.

But I know where I want to be. It will take me some time to get there and I don’t promise I’ll change all of my habits, but the longing is there like never before. The paradox is that it’s not always negative thinking; it’s not about growing older. It’s the opposite. A little “old school”? Maybe. But my sentiment is about staying young even if it means rejecting some of the trends that define the ever-evolving world, the trends, and products that will no doubt be adopted by future generations (oh well, now, after all, I’m starting to draw the lines between generations)

In no particular order:

  • Metaverse and cryptocurrencies — I don’t give a shit. I consider myself curious and open-minded but these couple of themes sound so boring, so overhyped. And I don’t care if my friends or folks much younger than me make fortunes. I.DON’T.CARE. I should mention that I don’t understand e-sports either — apparently a huge and fast-growing industry.
  • Being active to the extreme — bring it on! I want to run crazy fast…
