Things I’d never do if I were filthy rich

Ultra-rich people never fascinated me, but I don’t mind the mental exercise of speculating about what I would and wouldn’t do if I were crazy rich. It’s that for now — a mental exercise. But I’ve known wealthy individuals and I had stretches in my own life where a lot of luxuries were within reach and some of them I actually experienced. My father was a moderately successful entrepreneur back in the 1990s. We were able to travel a lot, and eat at very nice places and I spent four years at an elite-bearing school in England where I was friends with kids who came from very rich families. Later in my career, I came across very rich entrepreneurs. I watched them rise and fall.

It’s nice and easy to write about what you’d do and wouldn’t do if you were crazy rich! Maybe I’d become a very different person if I actually had a billion in my account so I don’t mean this story to have a virtue-signaling nature.

  • Never buy an expensive watch. I don’t want to be judgemental but these days expensive watches look so outdated, so old school. “Old school” doesn’t mean bad. But it’s so impractical. My Garmin sports watch is my treasured accessory and gadget, thanks to my love of running and occasional hiking. Why would anyone spend thousands (and some spend tens and hundreds of thousands) on a watch is beyond my understanding.
  • Never try or do any drugs. As in never. Maybe it sounds strange to mention this but I can imagine that when nothing is off limits it’s pretty easy to…
