The world’s a little crazy and on fire, but I just keep running
One of my kids recently deleted his Instagram account. He didn’t elaborate on the reason but I guess he thought it was a distraction.
I don’t think I ever will. I use social media to discover the news, listen to different opinions and follow the celebrities I like, especially athletes. I also love the humorous stuff, like comedians impersonating politicians. Do I sometimes scroll excessively through my social media? Yeah. Intellectual curiosity has a cost — “garbage” minutes.
This past week started with the expectation of Hurricane Hilary in Southern California. I’m in Florida for a few weeks with my son but most of my family is in Southern California. Hurricane in California — the tables were turned! Fortunately, the storm passed without causing much trouble.
Early in the week I saw the news of Russia’s warlord-turned-mutant Prigozhin die in a plane crash. It was expected that he’d be removed sooner or later so the news didn’t feel sensational. I still surprised myself however with how little interest I had in reading the details of yet another shit show in Russia. Death, blood, murder, lies. Ironically I’m probably no different than the Russians in Russia — no one gives a shit anymore. My “not-giving-a-shit” has different colors — that of an immigrant, but the substance is the same. Nothing Putin does can surprise anyone.
