The single most empowering thing you can do tomorrow
You can’t do it today because the opportunity is already gone.
I’m dismissive of most self-improvement blogs and motivational speakers. From productivity hacks to larger-than-life calls for action — it’s all too cliche and there is no acknowledgment of the uniqueness of our life paths and circumstances. In my experience, self-improvement is, above all, a journey of self-discovery. The journey is long and winding. There is a direction but no map to follow. I especially don’t believe in quick fixes, goals, and resolutions. Change takes time.
Recently, however, I did think of one specific action that anyone can benefit from and the impact is immediate.
Go for a run very early in the morning.
You don’t have to be a dedicated runner and I’m not suggesting your life will change — though it could change if you make running a habit.
I am saying that a single run very early in the morning can be incredibly uplifting.
You can make it truly early and often you must. If you have to travel to work or take kids to school, you probably need to be up no later than seven without any running. Let’s say a run takes forty minutes. You can’t jump from your bed and start running right away. I am a very experienced runner and I don’t eat before most of my early morning runs; I also don’t need to dress up as I run in warm places. Still, it takes me at least fifteen minutes to get going.
