Running changed my relationship with food in the most beautiful ways

It’s like there is now a love triangle: my running, my food, and I. Or should I call it a threesome?

It’s a little after 7 am here in California and I just had my breakfast. Nothing spectacular: a few pieces of pineapple, three fried eggs, and two pieces of toast, one with butter spread over it. This morning I also added a chicken sausage to my eggs. I don’t usually add anything to my eggs but there was a packet of organic chicken sausages from Sprouts in the fridge and I felt like cutting one into small pieces and adding it to my eggs.

Of course, I’m having coffee right now. Just plain back coffee, nothing fancy. I’ll have about four cups this morning. I don’t drink coffee to wake up. I just enjoy the drink.

As I sat down to start eating my breakfast, I experienced this most pleasurable feeling that I noticed I developed in the last two years as I took my love of running to a much higher level (last week for example I ran eighty miles!).

It’s not easy to articulate but it’s so special — this newly discovered relationship with food.

It’s like food is my dear friend and my partner. Maybe even my child… Sorry if these analogies sound bizarre. But I feel this mix of tenderness, love, patience, and profound appreciation. My food is my friend! My partner. The relationship is full of love and respect.
