Smileys under Brittney Griner stories. Bastards.

It’s everywhere — every story has a bunch of smileys and the comments are full of hate. She deserves it, she disrespected her country, she broke Russia’s laws, etc.

I do not follow WNBA but I have nothing but empathy for Griner. No, it’s not empathy. It’s fear. I’m terrified. I’m Russian, albeit an immigrant; I lived in Russia for many years; it’s terrifying to imagine being detained, regardless of whether there are legitimate reasons for it. Innocent or guilty, you’re at the mercy of corrupt judges in a corrupt country. Here we have a black woman under arrest, in a country full of bigotry and prejudice, in the most geopolitically tense period of time in modern history.

Do you expect a fair trial for Brittney Griner? Empathy? Compassion?

You can disagree with Brittney’s political views in America all you want. Frankly, I don’t know the history and I don’t care. Did she not kneel during the anthem, I’m guessing? So what? Protesting is not disrespecting. Peaceful protesting is certainly not disrespecting. Aren’t you allowed to protest in a free country?

If you’re not compassionate, if you’re not worried about Brittney, you’re a brainless and heartless bastard. Your place in hell is reserved, Putin will be your cell mate.
