One of my best weeks of running ever …in Florida. 62 miles

“Florida” and “running” don’t mix well. I spend quite a bit of time in Florida (the rest is in California!) and tried to persuade myself that somehow running in heat and humidity can be beneficial, at least in some ways. Makes you tougher. When you finally find yourself running in a more comfortable environment, you’re better prepared.

Running in heat and humidity sucks. The quality of your running goes down, unquestionably.

Yet somehow I’ve just had a great week of running in Florida, in the middle of the summer. I was injured in June but in recent weeks was able to ramp up my running routine to my usual level — 50–70 miles a week.

I arrived to Florida from California on Saturday morning. It was an overnight flight and I slept badly on the plane. Felt tired during the day but managed a seven-mile easy run (8.09 min/mile pace, 129 average HR).

So Saturday: 7 miles

Then I had one of the best long runs (17 miles, 147 HR) of my life on Sunday:

Monday: rest day. No running but I biked in the gym for 40 minutes.

Tuesday: 10 minutes warm-up, then 5-mile repeats. My intervals were very slow. Usually, I run my mile intervals about 5.45 min/mile. On Tuesday I could barely…
