No, Why We Shouldn’t Cut Off Friends or Family Over Politics
I recently read yet another story from the series “I’m cutting off my Trump-supporting friends or relatives.”
This one:
Long story short, the author threw her Trump-supporting female friend out of her circle.
Over 5K claps! Way to go!
What the fuck?
Since when has it become trendy to brag about cutting off relationships with fellow human beings, especially the ones you’re close to?
Life’s difficult in so many ways. Among other things, it’s very hard to hold together your family or your marriage, and often parents and kids become estranged. People go from vows of eternal love to being worst enemies. Love turns to dust.
It’s hard to maintain long-term friendships too. Life paths diverge, and yes, your views and values diverge too.
You don’t even have to do much to lose friends and relatives. If you don’t make an effort, these relationships fade for all kinds of reasons.
And now we’re breaking up with friends because of their political views? Worse — we glamorize the act and intellectualize it by writing blogs or posting about it on social media?
