Member-only story
My hobbies and indulgences cost me $6K a year.
I wrote several pieces about my entrepreneurial (and financial) struggles.
One of the commentators asked about how much money I’d save if I didn’t drink alcohol every night. I guess she must’ve read my story a few months ago about how I have a drink (beer or wine) every night.
So I thought — why don’t I calculate the cost of my drinks and my other hobbies. I only have one hobby — running. I would like to be the world’s best long distance runner when I approach my sixties! I’m now forty two.
My drinks. I’d say I spend on average $10 bucks every day. Say a buy a bottle of wine for $10 bucks; it lasts a couple of days; or a pack of beer for $15 that lasts a few days. The math is simple: I spend $3,650 a year.
My running. Three races a year (two marathons, a half marathon) is $500 a year (about $150 per race). So far I’ve avoided travelling for my races. The cost will go up a lot if start going places and paying for flights and hotels. For now though it’s only $500.
Running shoes: $160 for a new pair once every three months so say $640 a year in total; and twice a year I get expensive racing shoes (Nike Vaporflies) — $200 per pair, so $400. Some other minor running gear adds up to a few hundred.
So my races plus shoes plus my other running gear is $2,000 a year.
Drinks ($3,650) plus running ($2,000)= $5,650. Let’s round up to $6K.
