Last night my wife went to bed naked

It’s not like it’s something super rare. But after almost twenty-three years together it’s not something trivial either. On most days we go to bed tired and dressed up, at least partially. We often go to bed at different times. We sleep on the opposite sides of our king-size bed. We don’t express self-pity (well, sometimes we do) but there’s no doubt that at the end (and not just at the end) of most days we feel fatigued and overwhelmed. By raising our four kids. By our dreams and struggles. By life. Sometimes we go to bed arguing. Of course, on those nights we sleep on the opposite sides of our bed.

The last few weeks haven’t been any different. If anything, they’ve been more difficult than usual.

But the last few days have been different. Warmer? Cozier? More intimate?

It’s happened before, many times. You go through many forgetful weeks when there is no spark and certainly no fire. There is only fatigue. There is frequent frustration. You almost forget what love is. You remember it but deep inside you start worrying that love no longer is.

But then there is a spark! Out of nowhere, or maybe out of love that’s always there. You get intimate. Then you get intimate again already the following night. And then again.

It was like that this past week. We made love one evening, then we made love the following morning.

Then last night as we prepared for bed I saw my wife naked as we were preparing to go to bed.

I’ve seen her naked thousands of times but it never gets boring.

As we went to bed, we hugged each other, facing each other. We were minutes away from falling asleep.

But you don’t fall asleep when you hug each other, naked.

So we made passionate love.

For that love, for that fire that burns decade after decade, for that intimacy — even if it doesn’t happen often, I’m forever grateful.
