I’ve made $30 per story on Medium after writing for 28 months

I’m not sure this story will allow anyone to draw any conclusions, but I’ll make an extremely rare deviation from one of my most important principles: never to write about my earnings. I despise the authors who write stories about their earnings.

Why am I writing this then? Well, as you can see from the title, I’m not writing about my income from Medium in the month of January or how much I made from some viral story. Eight hundred stories in twenty-eight months is a meaningful journey.

This story is #799.

These are my earnings, using the Fractions Chrome plugin.

Divide $23,620 by 800 you get $29.59.

On the surface, this looks impressive, but there are several caveats. With Medium, the use of ‘average’ is a useless indicator. The number is vastly distorted by several huge-earning stories, which I will not discuss here. Mathematically, using the median would paint a much truer — and less joyful — picture. Secondly, my earnings tanked ever since Medium introduced a new algorithm in August of last year. I’m very annoyed by it — not so much about the recent inability to make any meaningful income from writing, but by how under the promise of improving the experience for writers, Medium crushed authors. It crushed me anyway. I maintained my consistency and stayed true to my voice, but my earnings evaporated after August 2023.

I’m not going to complain too much. Earning-wise, even if the ride is over, it was still a solid ride. Also, I take a very strategic view of my writing. I am building my audience. I write from the heart. I am consistent. Good things will happen sooner or later. I’m not talking about writing a viral story that makes me thousands. I know that with my writing on Medium, I’m reaching a broad audience, and sooner or later interesting opportunities will present themselves to me — new ideas, new connections, and new endeavors. In fact, I already benefitted indirectly from writing. I had several professional projects where people hired me because they discovered my writing.

So I will keep writing.
