Is being a “creator” at odds with a corporate career?

I’ve been working as a consultant in recent years so right now, I don’t have a corporate career, and I haven’t for a while, but every now and then I do search for opportunities, either jobs or consulting projects.

How do I feel about being a writer on Medium? Not that the whole world is reading me, but I am discoverable. I’ve written hundreds of posts since I started in 2021. The problem is that I don’t write stories like “How to integrate ChatGPT into your Python script” or “Why your start-up pitch sucks.” The latter I could attempt, but it’s of no interest to me. I am niche-less. Running is probably the only topic I consistently write about. Otherwise, I write on a myriad of topics. What’s on my mind finds its way to Medium. It’s not a self-compliment. On the opposite — I am aware of the awkward randomness and casualness of my writing. Some stories are just trash, but I keep them. Some have an element of controversy. I can be very left on some issues and more conservative on others. I don’t try to sanitize my past stories.

How does this all look to a potential employer?

I don’t know.

I imagine myself being the hiring person. Well, that’s a useless mental exercise because even as a hiring manager, I still look at the world with my ideals and beliefs. For example, I’d appreciate someone being creative, even if that means being controversial. Controversial often means honest. Honest means vulnerable. I’d want to have unusual people on my team.
