I’m thinking about becoming forever apolitical

These are the reasons:

  • I left Russia, my home country, almost a decade ago. I just don’t think I have any moral right to open my mouth and comment on the issues that affect millions of people living in the country, but not my family.
  • In the US I am now a permanent resident but some years away from citizenship. Even that technicality aside, I don’t yet feel I have a good grasp of US politics. Maybe I will eventually, but it can take decades.
  • Certainly, I have even less right or knowledge to comment on other countries. I lived in England some years ago but to comment on Brexit would be presumptuous and arrogant.
  • Increasingly I struggle to understand how an individual can be put in a pigeonhole characterized by simplistic political labels. Left, right, liberal, conservative, blue, red — I’m disillusioned with all these labels. I can be liberal on some issues but conservative on others. I can gravitate towards one political party, yet be of a low opinion of its leader. Or I can find the leader of the opposing party compelling enough to rethink my own views. Why would you ever take pride in not being able to change your views?
  • I don’t want to ever engage in virtue signaling or claiming moral superiority over others (often millions of others) because of my political views. I see a lot of my acquaintances doing it, at least on social media.
  • I’ve always found it surprising how easily and with how much confidence…
