I’m a non expert but am Russian and have a good feel for various under currents. My opinion It’s not about the NATO (though that narrative is common in Russia itself), it’s about Putins personal imperialistic ambitions and unsecurities - restoring the empire. He just doesn’t see Ukraine as an indepdent country, rather part of the ex empire
