If Medium introduced advertising, I’d be fine with it — better than its pathetic current treatment of writers
I’ve written so many stories in the past about how I’m not here to make money. And I’m not. I mean, I know I can’t make a living writing on Medium. The earnings are all over the place, and going viral isn’t a strategy.
But the latest trend has been pathetic — earnings down to a meaningless level, no more referral earnings (and half of the existing ones seem to have disappeared, probably indicating an exodus of readers from the platform), fewer reads, fewer boosts — everything.
I wouldn’t be ranting so much (I just wrote about this the other day) if I didn’t keep seeing similar stories from other writers. Clearly, my frustration is shared by other authors. Here’s one, for example:
So here’s a suggestion for Medium — introduce advertising. I wouldn’t mind a banner or a sponsored listing. It’s not perfect, and maybe it involves selling data to third parties, but I’d understand. What’s harder to accept is the lack of transparency and being treated poorly while also getting hypocritical, virtue-signaling announcements from Medium.
