If I were filthy rich, I’d spend my money on this thing, maybe a couple of things…

I’m not a very material (materialistic?) person. Maybe that’s why I’m not rich. I should be wealthy by now with my Harvard MBA and a bunch of other brands on my resume. But I’ve made lots of mistakes in my career and — again — I don’t care that much about living a luxurious life. Unfortunately, it’s not all that romantic — I have to worry a lot about money. I have four kids, we are a “tennis” family and I have financial scars that need healing. So I might not be “materialistic” but I ain’t a monk!

There are some luxuries I don’t understand. I mean I understand they are luxuries but I’d not spend money on them even I had billions in my bank account.

  • Expensive clothes, watches, jewelry. I’m not trying to impose my opinion or draw judgments, but folks wearing expensive watches are like aliens to me. My $200 Garmin running watch is my dearest accessory. Whenever I have some financial cushion, I’ll upgrade to a more premium version so that I can run with music without my phone.
  • Expensive food and wine. In fairness, if I never had to worry about money, I can imagine myself dining with my wife in some ultra-expensive restaurant. But it’d be for my wife, not that she’s expecting it. Otherwise, I could enjoy a nutritious and delicious self-made meal for $10 bucks at home any time, as much or more than at some fancy Michelin restaurant
