I’m about to do what I do very rarely — muse on self-improvement.

I hate self-improvement books, blogs, and coaches! For one thing, it’s all boring. Also, I’m deeply skeptical of anyone who claims to have become super productive. We’re all good at something, but usually, this something is just one variable in the equation of life.

There is one self-improvement book I did appreciate — Atomic Habits. It was very good at describing how I improved at running. My first story on Medium, in October 2021, was about running a sub-three-hour marathon. I still have it pinned. One reason I feature it on my Medium profile is that I am passionate about running and continue to improve at it. The other reason is that becoming good at running was an incredible learning experience. It was never about goal setting. It was about consistency, discipline, and developing an unbreakable habit. I don’t want to repeat too much what I told in that story!

A few days ago, I shared my sentiment in one of my favorite Facebook’s groups — a sub 3 h marathon.
