I ran 4 sub-three-hour marathons in 18 months, PRing every time. Takeaways.

I should mention that I’m in my forties. In my twenties, I ran four marathons; three were slower than four hours, and I just managed to run one in under four hours. I’m faster now by an hour and a half compared to my twenties. I am targeting a sub-2.40 marathon later this year.

So:
- Per my introduction, we vastly underestimate how fit we can become as we age. Yes, it takes effort, but isn’t it fascinating that we can be fitter than our younger selves?
- Consistency. Much has been said about the importance of consistency. I attest. I’ve not missed a run in three years. I’m not counting occasional purposefully planned rest days. I also had two minor injuries that interrupted my running for a few weeks. Even then, I exercised every day, mostly biking in the gym. If it sounds dramatic — not missing a run in three years — it’s because it kind of is. I don’t miss my runs. I just don’t. Even when I travel coast-to-coast, I usually fit a few miles into my day.
- Do not read too much into cliche recommendations from running…
