I prefer controversial characters over “decent.”

“Decency” is an honorable quality, don’t get me wrong. It’s subjective, but it’s real. I guess some people manage to get through life without ever defiling their reputation.

But it is subjective… And is it real? Are there people who are decent all-around? In their relationships, business dealings, parenting, and their everyday conduct?

I don’t think so.

This story is influenced by sports. I’m a huge fan of Novak Djokovic who lost today in Wimbledon’s finals. He’s still the greatest tennis player ever. His dominance transcends all sports, not just tennis. And yet he gets a lot of hate. My son just showed the commentary under some post relating to tennis. Nothing new — there’s an army of Nadal and Federer fans arguing that Djokovic is not GOAT, because apparently he’s not classy enough.

I get very irritated by these judgments. For one thing, they are amateur. Often silly. When the dust settles, in the GOAT debate no one will remember Federer’s well-mannered demeanor. The sporting stats will matter.

More importantly, I have empathy for Djokovic’s supposedly complicated character. Not supposedly. You can tell he’s complicated — he melts down, gets angry, and has strong views. He can be controversial.

Talking about controversial characters. Please read my story about Nick Kyrgios. If you’re not into tennis, you probably wouldn’t know much about Nick. Take my word for it: he’s the most controversial…
