I met God on my runs

This might be the most spiritual story I’ll ever write. Maybe it will be a bit cringeworthy — it’s ok.

I’m not talking about a runners’ high. Of course, I experience it. Actually, I run so much these days — every day — that the experience is less pronounced than in the past when I’d run less frequently. Then I’d finish my run, and feel energized and happy, my brain clearer than before the run; the feeling would stay with me for hours.

These days I run ten miles every day, sometimes more. The feeling of having completed another run is trivial for my body and mind.

Lately though — over the last year — I’ve started to experience something new — a lot more majestic. It happens once a month or even less often. It can be when I’m running on a trail, or when I’m on a track. It’s not related to my surroundings being picturesque, though I sure do often run in beautiful places. It’s not related to how easy my run feels on that particular day.

It just happens.

I’d be running and suddenly a burst of happiness and incredible energy would fill my heart and soul, my existence in its entirety. I’d feel infinite grace.

I can’t explain it fully. I’d look up to the sky and feel the most incredible connection with something higher. It speaks to me. It can only be God. It tells me you’ll be fine, I’m with you. “Fine” is an understatement. Because at any moment in time I usually have so many unresolved issues in my life, so much uncertainty, I trivialize the message…
