Let’s admit — tragic though Navalny’s death is, much of human history is filled with political murders and executions. We don’t even have to go back to the times of the guillotine. Remember the journalist who was chopped into pieces inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by Saudi assassins, reportedly at the direct order of the prince?
You probably do recall now that I’ve mentioned it but the outcry has long waned. There are bigger things at stake for the US-Saudi relationship.
So what makes us feel that we, collectively, irrespective of which country we are in, live in a world, that’s much more civilized and less violent than our ancestors experienced?
Is it just an illusion? After all, only eighty years separate us from the biggest massacre and genocide this planet had ever seen.
