Having given up alcohol, I don’t say “never again”

I’ve written so many stories about my alcohol abstinence in the last year that I don’t know which one to quote to summarize my journey.

It will soon be a year since I had my last drink. I sometimes ask myself — will I ever taste alcohol again? Once, after one of my long runs on a hot summer day, I was in the supermarket and caught myself wanting a cold beer. It wasn’t a strong desire, but the thought crossed my mind.

Or sometimes I have this image in my head: my wife and I are on vacation in Italy, and she orders a glass of cold Chardonnay. Why Italy? No idea. We haven’t been to Europe in years and aren’t planning a vacation there anytime soon. But it’s Italy I imagine…
