I’m having a lazy Sunday morning and thought I’d not attempt to write something smart or negative, not that I usually write smart or negative pieces!

We don’t really celebrate any religious holidays in our family. For one thing, we are “technically” Orthodox Christians. I had to look up when Orthodox Easter is — a week for now. But even that aside, we’re agnostic. We were agnostic when we were in Russia, we’re agnostic now.

But I respect all religions, all confessions. I’m very lucky to have been exposed to people of different faiths, and their traditions.

In Russia, I was baptized in 1988. I was eight then. Religion was suppressed in the Soviet Union, and many churches were destroyed. But some people, like my Mom, found their own paths to having Faith. So I did go to Church but it was rare.

In the mid-1990s I spent a year in Oklahoma. From Moscow to Oklahoma! Every Sunday my host family would go to a local church. My host dad sang in its choir. I had no problem with those Sunday church visits. Not that they were fun, but I had such a great relationship with my family in Oklahoma, that I saw no reason to rebel and not join them in their tradition.

Then at my boarding school in England, we had chapel — short morning sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays and a long one on Sunday. More importantly, it was at my boarding school when I made very close Muslim friends. I got used to their daily prayers and other…
