Four movies I recently watched
Over the winter break, I spent several nights watching Netflix and Apple TV movies with my kids. I guess we ‘binged watched’. It’s unusual for us to watch movies that often, but we got into a rhythm and watched a movie almost every night.
Four stood out.
The first two are not new. It’s just that my kids don’t stop searching for killer-animal movies. Most are trash, but these two were pretty good: Rogue (2007) and the Pool (2018). Rogue is an alligator movie where a group of tourists get stranded on a small island in Australia with a monster alligator roaming the nearby waters. You can guess the plot. The Pool also has an alligator, but the setting is more authentic: a couple gets stranded in a … drained pool.
Then we watched Society of the Snow (2022) on Netflix. Watching the opening graphic scene with a plane carrying a rugby team crashing into the snowy mountains, I said to my son how it looked a lot like the movie Alive from 1993. I then realized that it was a remake of Alive. It’s a good survival movie, based on a true story. I’m not sure it’s better than the original movie, but it was fine. Like in the first one, the theme of cannibalism-for-survival is pretty central.
Finally, we watched Scorcese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. I wasn’t sure it was suitable for children, but it was fine — cruel in its spirit…
