Florida is America’s ugliest state

All right, I haven’t been to all fifty states, but I’ve been to many. Nothing comes close to Florida’s ugliness, in my opinion.

Yesterday I was landing in Fort Lauderdale. Ugly. I should’ve taken some pictures. Ugly. Endless swamps. Perfectly flat swampy landscapes, occasionally interrupted by lines of concrete or asphalt — highways and roads.

You step out of the airport in Florida and there is unabating heat and humidity. I actually like hot weather and I guess “hot and humid” shouldn’t count towards “ugly” but in Florida it somehow does.

I then took a train from the airport to Delray Beach. You’d think any place with the word “beach” shouldn’t make it to the “ugly” places lists. But it’s kind of ugly. Unless you truly find yourself on the oceanfront, there is nothing picturesque about Florida.

I went for a run in the afternoon. Flat, unpicturesque, and dirty in places. There are some lakes and water canals but the latter aren’t pretty — they are mostly covered with green algae. Hundreds of small flies crashed into my body. Some I had to swallow. Also whenever you’re outside, there is always a risk of a thunderstorm. Many times I had to interrupt or cancel my runs because of lightning and tropical rain. Florida’s lizards are cool but you get used to them.
