Finally, I’m acknowledging America’s pathetic handling of Covid
Last week I got sick. Whatever virus it was it got everyone in my family, all six of us. Coughing, sneezing, headache, and muscle pain, and a couple of us had a short-lived fever. We’re all fully vaccinated except for our ten-year-old twins but something tells me that what we got sick with was IT, the latest variant. You know that virus that’s apparently going around. You might’ve heard about it in the news.
A week later, we’re all much better, so there is nothing dramatic to report.
While I was sick, I wanted to get tested. I tried.
It turned out impossible.
The nearest appointment at a local Walgreens or CVS — many days away.
At-home tests are all sold out at local pharmacies.
This morning I was taking my kids to tennis and observed a gigantic line of cars — easily a mile — going to a local park where they held Covid testing. Not a single car appeared moving. I imagine it was a wait of many hours.
We are currently in Southern Florida. I’m reading the headlines about the same problem in California where we just came from.
For a long time, I had defended America’s handling of Covid. My argument was that pretty much every developed country had fucked up and struggled. When some people pointed to New Zealand, as an example of “leadership”, I got especially defensive. New Zealand? Seriously? A tiny island in the middle of nowhere…
