Facebook is great for this, I recently discovered
I have mixed feelings about Facebook (oh sorry, Meta).
There’s absolutely no way I could’ve kept in touch with all of my relatives, ex-classmates, or ex-colleagues without Facebook. Because I traveled a lot for education and work, the “real human connections” argument just doesn’t work in my situation. Am I supposed to write a real letter to a friend who used to be in England but then moved to Dubai? Travel to Dubai from America’s West Coast to catch up with him? Meet halfway in London maybe? Not realistic. Facebook builds virtual bridges that are almost like real. Maybe it’s not the most sophisticated channel for sharing occasional glimpses of our life journeys but it’s a channel nonetheless.
Some of my interactions and reconnection on Facebook proved life-changing. They led to new opportunities on the professional and personal front.
There is a valid argument about spending too much time on social media, eternally scrolling instead of spending time on real experiences and with one’s family. True. But it’s not Facebook’s problem. If you’re an alcoholic, it’s your problem; don’t blame it on the supplier — the manufacturer of vodka or a California winery.
I do have one problem with Facebook. It’s of an emotional kind. It’s a little awkward to even admit as it’s not in my nature to be bitter or aggressive. I really dislike Mike Zuckerberg!
