Eating healthy doesn’t cost much
The other day I saw a story on Medium “Why is eating healthy so expensive?”
No link from me to this story, ’cause I disagree with it so much! I was almost outraged by its bull-shitness!
The premise was that for 10 bucks you get more calories out of 5 donuts than 5 apples.
That’s literally comparing oranges to apples! Well, donuts to apples.
In this note, I’m not going to analyze the exact nutritional content of different products or look at the budget of eating healthy versus eating junk. One of the reasons is that we don’t do this in real life, or very few people do. Rightly so. Unless you’re very ignorant or a child, it’s all common sense. Rice and pasta are carbs; meat, fish, eggs, and nuts are protein; there is fiber in vegetables; there is sugar in desserts.
I eat healthily, in general. I run a lot and have become very conscious about maintaining my lean weight. That said, I’m not a health freak when it comes to eating. I can have a soda every now and then, sugary pastry for breakfast, and every night I drink alcohol! I nibble a lot, especially in the first half of the day, and this nibbling doesn’t feel healthy — disorderly somewhat; I often put things in my mouth without feeling hungry. So I’m not perfect in my nutrition. Still, in general, I am conscious of eating healthily.
A narcissistic disclaimer. I run 50–60 miles a week. I live on a very simple diet while expending a lot of calories. If I can, anyone can!
